Topic: Hardware for monitoring

Hi mates. And what about a monitor for color correction?
I’ve recently bought a new Macpro (8 cores, 4Gb RAM, Nvidia 8800GT) and an Apple Cinema Display 23”. I’ll need soon a monitor for color correction, editing, etc…
Should I buy a broadcast monitor? In this case, what would yo recommend?
Should I buy other monitor (dell, etc…) as primary monitor and use the Apple’s for color correction issues?

You can’t forget you need something with hardware actually doing something, not just an interface like the intensity is. Even Multibridge is not recommended for work in COLOR.
IF not, buy a Kona LHe, which will come cheaper than the Kona3 for sure, and is a hell of a good board too!

There is no such thing, as the hardware from Blackmagic is extremely upgradable regarding new features through firmware updates and software, hence a long and prosperous life compared to other vendors. Decklink is divided in SD and HD products. The only new one in HD is the Decklink Extreme. I’d go for a HD PRO PCIe RGB 4:4:4 (1150€ aprox.), or for a cheaper alternative an Decklink SP (500€ aprox.), which can downconvert HD to SD and give you a component output. I haven’t tried it, but read about it at the time I bought my board.

Topic: Coloring a 40-50min short - tips?

Until now, i finished 17 episodes (45-50 minutes each) of serbian TV series Human Nest. The series shoot with HDCAM F900 with pro35 adapter for film camera lenses , log and capture in DV PAL for offline, and recapture in Apple ProRes(HQ) for online.
Mastered again in HDCAM for archive and BetaSP for airing.
We have G5 Quad, 6 GB ram, Quadra FX 4500, 4 TB storage (300 mb/s), Multibridge Extreme, Tangent Devices CP 100 panel and Xrite Pro One monitor probe.

Topic: Coloring a 40-50min short - tips?

Just finished a project in color. a 26 minute short film with a total of 340 edits. I had no problems at all:-)
I was a bit nervous about it but I thought I’d see how much color could take.
btw. all clips were uncompressed 4:2:2 10bit

If you don’t have time to fool around you should cut it as 50 or 100 cut chunks… It is the most i’ve used it so far without problems…but if you do have the time, give it a go a see how it handles all the footage on you machine.

CHeerZ!

Of course AG is right, it’s more edit # dependent than clip duration. It depends on a load of factors, but i’d say at least 132 cuts not to bother the audience and make them zap or sleep over ;-)

The color manual suggests that you divide your timeline into 22 minute reels. And I talked to the writer of the manual this week at a seminar and he said it was just a guideline. It will work with longer durations but Color could be slightly more sluggish. (And it’s not really the duration that is the limiting factor. It’s the number of edits in the sequence.)

Flatten all layers and bake effects, including shots with different res, codecs, speed, etc. That should make it possible. Of course color corrections from FCP should also be discarded prior to grading.

Cheers!

The decklink is just $50 more than the intensity. Do yourself a favor. Get the decklink :)

Topic: Hardware for monitoring

You do not mention whether you on Mac or PC. I am on a MacPro4 3Ghz with 4G of RAM dual 23inch Apple Cinema Displays a ViewSonic 1912wb and a 26 inch Sony Bravia monitor. I wanted to buy a large enough broadcast monitor but thought $7200 for the monitor I wanted was a tad much, so I settled for the Matrox MXO solution that uses a box that converts an ACD 23” into an HD quality 23” broadcast monitor (http://lfhd.blogspot.com/2007/03/matrox-mxo-part-2.html, http://www.dv.com/reviews/reviews_item.php?articleId=193700401, http://www.matrox.com/video/products/mxo/home.cfm). These links say much more about the MXO than I can repeat here, but suffice it to say it is an affordable solution to buying a 23 inch broadcast quality HD monitor.

I would love to speak or communicate with anyone else using the MXO in their Color work flow.

  • Intensity
Broadcast monitors usually have BNC connectors with SDI/HD-SDI.
I would recommend a Blackmagic Decklink instead of the Intensity.
Aja Kona is supposed to be a better alternative but I haven’t tried it. I use the Blackmagic cards and I think they’re great.
  • Codec
I have used ProRes just once but not for grading. It’s a great “low cost” HD-codec for the times when you don’t have the bandwidth for uncompressed. It worked great with the Decklink both in and out. (You need a fast computer for capturing ProRes if you don’t have an Aja ioHD.) Compare ProRes and Uncompressed by rendering a shot in both codecs and figure out yourself if it’s up to your (or your client’s) standard.
  • HD-Link
The HD-Link converts from SDI/HD-SDI to HDMI/DVI and won’t be necessary if you have a broadcast monitor.
Get a decent soundcard if you want to do 5.1 monitoring.
