Topic: Showroom / Two Music Videos. Love your work, great job! I love the rooftop location and desaturated look of the first and the blues in the shadows of the second. Really nice, I’d love to be able to grade like this. Nice lens choices. As for the aliasing, I can only think of shooting flat with sharpening all the down like in Stu’s ‘flatten your 5D’ blog post |

Topic: Tips, Tricks and Tutorials / Best way to White Balance? There’s the autobalance button in the Primary room. What you could also do is what you are doing already, and that is to use the parade+vector scopes in conjunction with the still-store. Take a still of the ideally balanced shot, go to the shot you want to match and display the loaded still. pick a screen-split and balance away. Some good links autobalance tutorial ken stone online documentaion apple’s color matching tutorial |

Topic: Tips, Tricks and Tutorials / Fx room full explanation Thanks for chiming in on this board Ben, its heartwarming to see industry professionals like yourself contributing and sharing their knowledge. I bought the Creative Color product and the Digital Video Color Grading product a few weeks ago. Well worth it :) How did you go about getting fashion clients, I’d love to do that sort of work as it would really push me CC-wise. I’m just doing ‘boring’ docco stuff. I need some excitement in my life ;-) |

Topic: The art of Color / De-noise? Hey Color buddies – I need a way to de-noise some footage. They don’t want to buy any additional plugins so I’ll have to roll one in the color FX room. Do you know how to make a de-noise filter in ColorFX? Share your recipes, I’m all ears! |

Topic: Tips, Tricks and Tutorials / Fx room full explanation When the average user walks into the fx room, it’s a little scary as It’s truly ‘roll your own’ territory. Not like FCP or After Effects where you drag and drop a filter on and you immediately see the effect. Not only are you forced to know what each node does but what combination of nodes do something useful and aesthetically pleasing. It’s hard, really hard and who has time for extensive experimentation… The closest I’ve seen to node heavy fx-room work is the stuff put out by curious turtle If you’re looking for fx-heavy, then they are it. The problem for me is its so fx heavy as to be totally intimidating to the average user (me!) I think, wow , I would never be able to think up the trees he’s building, and I give up right there! He has a youtube channel, search for curious turtle. Short of that, there’s a PDF put out by Richard Harrington (who I think is one of the most underrated, truly selfless and giving guys out there) which goes through justabout every filter in Photoshop, and seeing as what we’re doing is kinda PS but in motion, I think its really useful. You can get it thru this link I hope this helps, Any advanced users reading this post please chime in. I’d like to know too! |

Topic: Off Topic / How do I get into the business of dailies? Hey man, you and me too buddy! You and me too… Dailies as far as I can remember, is where the junior/assistant will do a 1st-light pass on the rushes to make them ‘look nice’ for the Director to view. You can’t really get an idea of what you shot, lighting and exposure-wise, if all you’re looking at is a flat R3D file, so you make the basic primary-in type adjustments plus any stipulations such as a grad here or there. You’re just basically dialling in the overall look. Getting it into decent shape before the senior comes in on a client attend and works her magic. As for getting the gig, you have to be in a facility.. btw , did you have a crack at that skin softening request? I’m not sure what tools in CFX room to translate into the AE tools to get what she wants. |

Topic: Off Topic / Underhanded and Unethical 'Journalism' going on at 'geniusdv.com' I was scanning my RSS like I usually do when I came across a release piece at Genius DV about DaVinci Resolve coming to the Mac <<< read the article I thought it would be a straight-forward piece with maybe some more info on the launch of this great software on the Mac platform, but instead they, oddly, turned it into hack-piece against Color. I say oddly, because I went there to read about DaVinci Resolve, not Color, and found there, just simply sophomor-ish attacks on Color, that if the writer of this piece were an actual day-in-day-out user of the software, just wouldn’t give a monkey’s about.. The article invited its readers to leave a comment so I did.
So imagine my surprise when I got up this morning to find not only my comment gone , but the ability to leave any comment at all disabled too.
For the record, here is my comment which addresses some of the comments made by the author of the article.
They make it look like you can’t get any work done in Color, that it’s just some sort of nightmare to use which it clearly is not. I did not attack, insult, defame or disparage anybody, any product or their site , which I love by the way, – tonnes of FC Studio tips there, a real goldmine – so why delete my comment? odd.. |

Topic: Workflow / Color UI too small to see? You could work in dual screen mode on your laptop, but then you have to manage between your two open windows. Not Ideal, but at least you get a ‘big’ view. Or just buy an additional monitor or better yet, some external monitoring setup like an MXO. |

Topic: Workflow / Color UI too small to see? If you’re on a laptop, you need to add an additional screen, you can’t run C on a single screen lappy. Once you add the monitor, under the “window’ menu, toggle ‘dual screen mode’ and restart Color. |
