Busy bees. I am editing a music video at the moment. Shot on Red.
The grading will be done on a DaVinci – not Color.

The centenary is colorfarm. Kind of a shy fella, no posts nor grades.

For the 1000th user we’ll have an iPod or something :)

It’s the same as iChat… And if you use Color you’re using a Mac. iChat is preinstalled for your conveniance… :)

The best bet is to contact your local Audodesk dealer. I don’t think Autodesk list any MSRP on their website.

I’m with ya. Been busy. Also, been actively researching alternative grading tools for high end images, ie RED, Film etc. Anything below that Color is great.

Let’s just say that I have had enough pain with FCP (crashing on playback) and quicktime (gamma shift) this year. Workarounds will fix some issues, but not all.

Avid is not dying anytime soon. Different tools for different people.
I love their HD offline codec (DNxHD 36) and the interface. It’s all about speed when you get to know it.

I started with FCP v1.2.5 on a blue G3. But I was forced to switch to Avid for a project that used Avid for Online. I liked the app and I bought a licence for Xpress DV. I upgraded that to Pro and then last year I upgraded to MC Soft. It’s an awesome tool.

But I own FCP too, and it’s great for short projects and it’s handy with I/O (blackmagic) for other apps.
And Color is included. That’s why we’re here :)

Please don’t turn this into an Avid/FCP flame war.

I’m an Avid fan and the new software that’s coming in June is supposed to rock on Mac Pro 8 core.
So just bring it on, Apple… I’ll keep them cores busy :)

I’ve got first generation Mac Pro. I was so lucky to test one with 8 cores a few months ago.. It REALLY kicked my Macs but into the mud when it came to exporting H.264 and MP2 through compressor, for instance. But I won’t get rid of this piece. It’s a landmark to me. “The beginning of the new business” kind of. I’ll keep it, and one day, but the side door up on “Hall of fame” with a golden frame around it, and the titles of the productions I’ve done with it underneath.

The new Mac Pro sounds extreme!! Wonder what price it might start at..

I’m very busy being available to certain people these days, and hopefully I’ll be busy with some grading over the weekend.
Until then, I’m busy playing GTA IV – and loving every frame of it!

I use Avid, After Effects, Photoshop and Shake. (And now Color). Shake is being used in a ton of feature films as an “offline” compositor. Can a $500 app be used for serious VFX? Of course. But when you have a client breathing down your neck, the high end tools you describe are great because they offer realtime response and playback. They still need to render though.

A friend of mine is a flame compositor and besides being a great vfx artist he also has to entertain the client when the machine is tracking or rendering. I’d rather have a cup of coffee :)

Maybe it’s a graphics card problem. I’m grading at a different computer now and I haven’t seen the bug yet.

Since I don’t know how the image looks before any filters I can only guess.
(Please post a link to it)

After Effects
  • Use Levels and Hue/Saturation to adjust the colors.
  • Duplicate the layer.
  • Add some Fast Blur to the top layer (10-20 px?)
  • Turn the transfer mode to “Screen” on the top layer.
  • Adjust the opacity to control the amount of “mist”.

This method is often called “instant sex”. I read about it in a Trish and Chris book many years ago. If you Google “instant sex” make sure you add “After Effects” as well :)

Edit: There seems to be some blur around the edges. Is this done “in camera” with a Lens Baby or something? Otherwise it can be achieved in After Effects with a Compound Blur and a radial gradient.

Apple Color
Coming soon. (Not installed at this computer I’m posting from and I don’t know the names of the nodes in colorFX room)
