Hi all , I am a professional video editor , and I have been learning grading for about 6 months now.. and I think that FX room is really interesting thing to learn..

so to the point ( I think if someone can explain the usage of items like the (add) , (alpha channel) (Maximum ) ( Minimum) and other stuff , how to use them ,and how to set

different combinations

I have used different training as ripple and other stuff , but they never get deep into the FX room

Thanks everyone

Shalash

When the average user walks into the fx room, it’s a little scary as It’s truly ‘roll your own’ territory. Not like FCP or After Effects where you drag and drop a filter on and you immediately see the effect. Not only are you forced to know what each node does but what combination of nodes do something useful and aesthetically pleasing. It’s hard, really hard and who has time for extensive experimentation… The closest I’ve seen to node heavy fx-room work is the stuff put out by curious turtle

If you’re looking for fx-heavy, then they are it. The problem for me is its so fx heavy as to be totally intimidating to the average user (me!) I think, wow , I would never be able to think up the trees he’s building, and I give up right there!

He has a youtube channel, search for curious turtle.

Short of that, there’s a PDF put out by Richard Harrington (who I think is one of the most underrated, truly selfless and giving guys out there) which goes through justabout every filter in Photoshop, and seeing as what we’re doing is kinda PS but in motion, I think its really useful. You can get it thru this link

I hope this helps,

Any advanced users reading this post please chime in. I’d like to know too!

Hey Marcus you have been more than helpful , I completely agree that FX room can make miracles but we need to get the main Idea of using the nodes and the use of each item in the bin , anf the sequence of making the nodes as their order is really important

Hi, it’s Ben from Curious Turtle here. Thanks for the mention.

I agree that the ColorFX room is very powerful and in my opinion highly underrated. Probably due to the fact that it can be hugely intimidating to new users. However, once you get the hang of it the fun really starts!

A helpful tip is to start thinking of the nodes in terms of building up little widgets. If you create a small node tree to do a highlight glow, save it. You’ve got a node tree that makes a hi-con black and white image, bring that saved highlight glow back in! Bang, you got a new effect! Those big trees are made up of smaller branches and breaking those branches down is significantly easier to do.

I spend quite a lot of time (the best part of two hours) in the ColorFX room in my training set Creative Color Grading. It goes from basic ideas, to creating and reusing widgets and showing why you’d want to use some of the more obscure nodes. I’m not sure about the direct linking policy here, but you can have a look at it on the Curious Turtle website.

I’ll see what I can do about putting an excerpt of one of the ColorFX exercises up on YouTube.

Cheers,
Ben

Hi,

Sorry for the slight delay. Had to locate the original files, so that it didn’t compress all to hell on YouTube.

Here’s the link:

Thanks for chiming in on this board Ben, its heartwarming to see industry professionals like yourself contributing and sharing their knowledge. I bought the Creative Color product and the Digital Video Color Grading product a few weeks ago. Well worth it :) How did you go about getting fashion clients, I’d love to do that sort of work as it would really push me CC-wise. I’m just doing ‘boring’ docco stuff. I need some excitement in my life ;-)
