Hot news from Vegas: daVinci’s Resolve coming to OSX. Software only version for $995USD. Wow. #NAB (via @johnmontfx) http://twitter.com/johnmontfx

This is for scratch and dust removal and such, right? Or is it a complete color grading application ?

Looks like I had it all messed up in my head. Not so uncommon. Resolve is the application, while Revival is one of the possibilities, if I got it right.

Anyway – they just posted pricing now.

Mac Software: $995
Mac Software + Resolve control panels: $29,995

That’s quite some price… Think I’ll stick to the software for now.. As soon as I know what panels will be supported, I’m on the train to “buy the damn thing”.

EDIT

Just found a post on CreativeCow regarding all the fancy news about this.

I quote..
DaVinci Resolve might be affordable now, but it’s still a high end solution, so requires a third party control panel such as the Tangent Wave, and single CUDA capable GPU card. If video I/O is required, then it also requires a DeckLink HD Extreme card. Of course we will work hard to open DaVinci Resolve up to other brands of control panel, capture cards and GPUs as fast as we can.

As you can see, one of the requirements is a CUDA based GPU. This means it has to be a nVidia card. ATI is a no go. Another good reason to get an EVGA GeForce GTX 285 then. Simply put, more power for less than a Quadro.

Another edit

Just got a reply from a Stefan Haupt over at Blackmagic Design. I asked him if Resolve would support 3rd party control panels, just before I found the quote above.

The short answer is yes, we are supporting Tangent Waves Panel. Other 3rd Party Panels will follow.
Best Regards,
Stefan

Mark this. “Other 3rd party panels willl follow”
Promising !

Another reply from Stefan regarding availability.
“The Software will be available around June, called Version 7 and Mac Version with Tension Integration around July.”

I tend to YouTube a lot to gather information about new stuff, but unfortunately, YouTube didn’t give any results, but Vimeo did!
Resolve at NAB !

I popped them a mail about whether they will do PLE (like Nuke), but that’s a no go. They’re working on supporting xmls from FCP (EDL is really old school), and I’m not sure if it supports ProRes.

I wonder if the fcp integration will lead to the ability to operate within a multi layer timeline? Single layer sucks.

So, release of DaVinci is close. Any thoughts on it? Have any of you pre-ordered or planning to order?
And if you haven’t seen it yet, Take a look at this video

Here’s the minimum requirements, based on reading loads of forum posts at the Cow and RedUser.

Either a….
  • Mac Pro 2009 2.26GHz 6GB RAM
  • Mac Pro 2010 (no further information yet)
....with
  • Mac OS X 10.6.4
  • GeForce GT 120
  • GTX 285 or Quadro 4800
  • Decklink HD Extreme 3D
Need a reason to toss the ATI card? Simply put, DaVinci utilizes CUDA, it’s an nVidia technology to enable the GPU to handle the processing instead of the CPU. This gives you real-time performance in SD, HD and up to 2K.
Supported panels at release (subject to change, no information other than told through forums or videos)
  • DaVinci Resolve
  • Tangent Wave
Licensing
  • You will need to have a DaVinci Resolve for Mac USB dongle attached at all times during use
What do you get with Resolve?
  • Real-time processing and in some cases, rendering will be real-time or faster (ref. fxphd and videos on the internet)
  • Good and solid conform tools and project management
  • A good and fast tracker (no single point tracking – tracking features all over the place within a PowerWindow, similar to what we know as a vignette in Color)
  • Nodes instead of rooms!!
  • Recently announced, Resolve for Mac will let you monitor stereo 3D

We just ordered a GTX 285 (The last one in stock) and we’re waiting for the official release of Resolve in a couple of weeks. We use an MC Color surface and hopefully Euphonix will have an update ready soon.

Smile OlaHaldor 181 post(s)

Last thing I heard about MC Color and DaVinci: “Don’t expect a working solution for another couple of months, after the release”. A pitty.. I’ll go the Tangent Wave route if nothing happens on that end.

Let’s just say a certain someone has been playing with the beta for two weeks and is ready to jump on either panel. Rumors has it though that USB devices have better response (less lag) than ethernet units, like the MC Color. I don’t know for sure though, just passing the rumor further into the interweb.
